  Best egg rolls and hot & sour soup in the area.
  So if you can pull those 2 off well, usually the rest of the menu is passable.
  Just wish the dining room wasn't so depressing. They need new booths and maybe a drop ceiling with lights lower to the tables.

  This place definitely fits the description of a hidden gem. It has an ugly storefront in a sad little strip mall in a boring little town. But the food is excellent (mostly).
  
  I judge the quality of a Chinese restaurant primarily on one thing: the quality of their hot and sour soup. If they make a bad hot and sour soup, you can pretty much guarantee they don't do anything right. If they make a great hot and sour soup, you can pretty much guarantee they have a number of high quality items on the menu.
  
  Mandarin Gourmet makes a superb hot and sour soup-- the best I've had in YEARS.
  
  My wife (not a purist) ranks chinese restaurants on the quality of their crab rangoons. Mandarin Gourmet has the best crab rangoons by far in the region.
  
  Not so great: Crispy Beef with Sesame. It was overly breaded, and pretty bland.
  
  Not so great: Their wonton soup. Boring broth. Boring wontons.
  
  Very good: Chicken with black bean sauce. Not breaded. Flavorful and nice.
  
  I've only been here twice. The second time was the very next day after I discovered the place. I needed to get more of that hot and sour soup.
